Dirt Law Blog’s Purpose

BACK TO KNOWLEDGE CENTER

Yesterday I was pondering a quote by one of my favorite authors, Ralph Waldo Emerson.  He said, “Don’t be too timid and squeamish about your actions.  All life is an experiment.  The more experiments you make the better.”  You may be saying to yourself, “that doesn’t have much to do with land use and real estate development.”.  But I think you might be wrong.

As the modern world becomes more connected through technology it is also moving at a much faster pace. Ideas shared across state lines or even from coast to coast through the click of a button could be the genesis for a whole host of new development and environmental regulations.

To illustrate this point I have notice that there are several sub-specializations starting to develop within the land use practice just because regulations are moving much more swiftly than in the past.  New ideas are generating a variety of new concepts on how to do development  and environmental considerations, such as greenhouse gas emission reductions, are slowly creeping their way into discussion of how we develop our communities.

Sometimes it feels like the regulations are moving at such a brisk clip that the industry and marketplace  cannot catch up, even with new technology and designs coming on line.  To that end, it is important to monitor these changes and creations in the law to stay informed, so that the development community can respond with meaningful insight, comments, and concerns.  It is my hope that this blog will serve to keep the development community informed so that we can respond better to the changes around us.  To that end, we move onto to an experiment as Emerson suggested.
So to conclude with another Emerson quote, “Don’t go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
